In Control

1991: We had free cable in our apartment. I spent way too much time watching TV and not enough time studying or paying attention to Elaine. One night she came out about 1am and asked if I was coming to bed. She'd already been asleep for a couple hours. "What do you mean, coming to bed?" This was one of those moments when we learn about each other. "You've been watching TV for like 4 hours." "So, what's wrong with that, I'm unwinding." If only I could go back in time and tell that kid some of the stupid things he would say or do. Well, I learned that Elaine never watched TV. She had a black and white TV all the time she was growing up. On the other hand, I think I may have been addicted. I've since rehabilitated but that night was a bitter wake-up call. In this song you can guess some of the shows I watched, also it was a time when network stations went "off-air". Can you imagine the commercial TV going off-air today. This is one of my "When I was a kid" statements. When I was a kid TV went off at 1am. They'd play the national anthem and then snow. At 5 or 6am, it would come back on with the national anthem.

One more laugh before I tell Woody goodnight
We'll all yell "Norm!" when he comes in tonight
Mike Kinsley doesn't make me want to smile
Pat Buchannon makes the crossfire wild

That war makes Benjamin Franklin Pierce irate
I hope tonight Klinger can get a section eight
I'm sorry about those cops who had to fight
Cause I know that most cops are alright

I'm in control
I can go
Anywhere I want to
I'm in control
I can go
But can I go

Everyone in Japan goes to those bars so they can sing
Why does the President talk shop with Larry King?
Jay Leno is much better than Arsenio Hall
Dave Letterman is funnier than them all

I'm in control
I can go
Anywhere I want to
I'm in control
I can go
But can I go

She says I'm going to bed
He says I'll be in next break
She hears how to make a million bucks in a day
He hears land of the free home of the brave
He hears, he hears a sign wave

I'm in control
I can go
Anywhere I want to
I'm in control
I can go
But can I go

One more laugh before I tell Woody goodnight
We'll all yell "Norm!" when he comes in tonight
