I wish it was a long time ago
When I couldn't lift my head
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt this weight on my shoulders
I wish it was a long time ago
When I couldn't catch my breath
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt this weight on my shoulders
If I had the strength
I'd take step
Give me this mountain I will climb it
I can't make it all alone
Give me this mountain I will climb it
I can't make it on my own
Give me this mountain I will climb it
It's my only way back home
I wish it was a long time ago
When I wet my pillow with tears
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt my heart was breaking
I wish it was a long time ago
When death left me all alone
I wish it was a long time ago
When I lost my love, my friendship
If I had the strength
I'd bring her back
Chorus
I wish it was a long time ago
When I held my face in my hands
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt ashamed of my actions
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt the pain of sin
I wish it was a long time ago
When I felt this weight on my shoulders
If I had the strength
I'd give it up
Chorus
Show me the way, I will obey
You'll lead and I will follow
I'll take a step, You'll lift my head
You'll make my heart feel better
You'll ease my pain, You'll lift my shame
I'll have a life that's better
And in the end I'll live again
With those I love forever
Give me this mountain
2005:
We had a hike to Mt. Whitney for the young men in our church. The theme was "Give Me This Mountain". This theme was reference to Joshua 12:14 - "Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said." For me this is about overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles.
At that time, Mt. Whitney seemed to be a physical obstacle. It turned out to be one of the great experiences I've had. Since then I've had additional experiences in that area. One of those was in 2008, when I hiked Mt. Langley with my oldest son. A couple days later, some youngsters talked me in to going back. We covered about 18-20 miles to get to 14,000 feet and back.
This song, to me, means there are physical obstacles, also mental, and spiritual. We can't overcome our obstacles alone- "if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out."
I'm proud of this song. It's one of my own that I enjoy listening to. People who hear it don't seem to enjoy it as much, but it means something to me. I usually care if people don't like my songs, I mean, I want people to like them, but for some reason I don't care if people like this one. I like it.
